The ABC Daily Reader - Vol. 1

Now in it's 2nd season, The American Bible Challenge, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, has rapidly become the highest-rated show ever in GSN history. By taking on unique questions spanning all of Scripture, teams excitedly won money, not for themselves, but for a favorite charity. I have also spoken with people who 'play along at home', testing themselves and others over who who gets the most correct answers.

Good news! Consulting Producer, Troy Schmidt, has put together a daily reader based on The American Bible Challenge. The book leads the reader through nine weeks of study and has over 300 questions to test your Bible knowledge. Each day has a portion of Scripture to be read and 5 questions designed to challenge and inspire you into both deeper study and life application. If you get stumped for the answer (or challenged by someone in competition with you!), all the answers are in the back.

To give you an idea of some of the type questions you may encounter, click on this link: American Bible Challenge Trivia Countdown

Other notable places you may want to check out are

Love this book!! A devotional/trivia book that brings out my competitive side? Oh yeah!! I like it just for personal reading, but this would be a fantastic book to use for family devotions for older elementary aged kids on up to the great-grandparents. Even the younger kids can learn as the family discusses the Scripture, answers the questions, and talks about how the lesson learn can apply to your life. However, you could also use this as a group Bible Study---as simple or as elaborate as you want to go with it. I can see teams and challenges being made!

Of course, you may not want to get into cash rewards, but perhaps the winning team could select the next group missions project or something similar. There are many possibilities of how this book could be used for learning, but also for fun. We each have various learning styles, and there is no point in having access to God's Word if you don't read it, memorize it, and use it in your life.

GIVEAWAY!!
FlyBy Promotions also has a copy available to send to a randomly selected winner. If you are interested in being in the contest, please let me know (preferably on the blog), and I would love to know how you would want to use this book. Dead line to enter is Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 6pm CDT.

Home Run by Travis Thrasher

Hone Run is a novel about baseball star Cory Brand--a man who knows how to win the game. His personal life, though, is a falling apart and his escapades are becoming more legendary than his ability on the field. His past is full of regrets and memories that haunt him, and he has chosen to keep the past, including his family, out of sight and out of mind much of the time. However, his out of control drinking, temper, and other antics finally push his management and publicists into a suspension while he gets his life together and allows the PR people time to re-invent his public image.
"To save his career, Cory must go back to the town where it all began. His plan is simple: coach the local Little League team, complete a recovery program, and get out as fast as possible. Instead, he runs headfirst into memories he can’t escape ... and the love he left behind. Faced with a second chance he never expected, Cory embarks on a journey of faith, transformation and redemption. And along the way, he discovers a powerful truth: No one is beyond the healing of God."  (back cover)

Ok, I have been hearing rave reviews about the film that will be released next month, so I was quite excited to be offered the chance to read the novel. I hate to say it, but I didn't feel the book held up to my expectations. I mean, it was good, but not great. Some of it seemed a bit superficial and I had a lot of questions that remained unanswered. (I won't get into them because I prefer not to do spoilers, esp for new products) That being said, I still want to see the film, and I do recommend the book to others. I will probably read it again because I do feel that it deserves another chance; I have changed my mind on other films and books before. So, I would give it a high 3 stars, but it's not close enough to be a solid 4 for me.

Speaking of the film, I am including the trailer here. I really do want to see the film (& then I will re-read the book).

The book is out now and  Home Run - the movie will be released in theaters on April 19th. Click here to find a theater in your state.
Also, if you need a Biblical, balanced program to help you with past hurts, hang ups, and habits, please look for a Celebrate Recovery group near you.

GIVEAWAY: To win a copy of this book, please leave a comment on blog to let me know you wish to be entered. The winner will be randomly selected on Sunday, April 7th at 6pm CDT.

Little Angels Prayers For Every Day

Roma Downey (The Bible Series, Touched By An Angel) has written a new book for young children called Little Angels Prayers for Every Day. It features more than 50 simple prayers that you can pray with your child. Starting with good morning prayers and ending with bedtime prayers, the other prayers cover topics like thankfulness, praise, help, comfort, and praying for others. This is a good way to help train a child how to pray and to know that they can talk to God about anything, anytime. There are a few Bible verses that are relevant to prayer the book also!

Roma speaks about this and other Little Angels projects in the video below.

This is a boardbook that is easy for younger kids to handle as their parents help them read this book and teach them about prayer. The brightly colored illustrations by Lisa Reed are sure to captivate children and hold their attention. Of course I loved the content too. As children mature, of course it is hoped that they will learn to pray in their own words, but this is a great starting point for kids. I still remember memorizing both blessing "God is good, God is great..." and the bedtime prayer of "Now I lay me down to sleep..." and felt very privileged when I got to pray them. It started a habit of talking (praying) to God that continues to this day. I definitely recommend this for preschoolers on up to early elementary age.

GIVEAWAY: To enter to win a copy of Roma Downey's Little Angels Prayers For Every Day simply leave a comment on this blog post. Winner will be selected on Sunday, March 10th at 6pm CDT.

The Little House That Stood

VeggieTales: The Little House That Stood

When the Three Little Pigs roll into Cabbageville looking to build some new houses, they meet one builder with a plan and two without a clue! Larry builds with hay, Mr. Lunt with bricks, but only Bob builds his houses on a firm foundation - following the wise plans from the Master Builder's Handbook! Will the Little Piggies make the right choices when it comes to building their houses - and their lives - on solid ground? Find out in this parable that shows kids when they follow God's blueprints, then can stand strong when the storms come!
(back of dvd)

This latest VeggieTales dvd is sure to be a hit with any pre-schooler...or anyone who has been a pre-schooler. The first story is a combination of The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders and The 3 Little Pigs. However, the builders in this tale are Bob, Larry, and Mr. Lunt and they are each building a house for the 3 pigs.

Larry and Mr. Lunt want to take the quick and easy path and ignore Bob's wisdom about building on a firm foundation. When Wolf River causes the dam to crack, which house will still be standing after the flood?
The lesson learned is that to weather the storms that come your way isn't about how strong you are, but how strong is your faith in God?

########################################################

The 2nd story, The Good Egg of Gooseville, is a retelling of Humpty Dumpty, featuring Bob as the Mayor. The job of being mayor isn't all that it's cracked up to be. In fact, Mayor Humpty is cracking from the stress of trying to meet the demands of the townspeople. He literally goes "up the wall" to get away from it all, but his view from the top gives him a new perspective of what is happening in his town. Everyone has become so absorbed in their own needs that they aren't seeing when their neighbor needs help. Will the people learn to love their neighbors and help those in need? This is a great take on helping others.

GIVEAWAY: I am able to offer 1 copy of this dvd to one of the readers of this blog. Leave a comment, preferably on the blog. Contest ends March 10, 2013 at 6pm CDT.

Gift Of A Servant by Tamara Amos

A father waits up on Christmas Eve night to demand retirement from the hero of his childhood, Santa Claus. The same saint who used to symbolize Christmas spirit is now plastered on advertisements everywhere, driving shoppers into holiday hysteria! Dear old Dad makes a mistake, however, by forgetting what every child knows: that when Santa comes in the night with a bag full of surprises, he always leaves the perfect gift.

Gift Of A Servant
is a glimpse into the soul of one of the most celebrated and beloved saints of our time. It is a journey into the heart of his mission to bestow God’s love upon His children, and an invitation to join him in this holy quest.

Enter in with an expectant heart to receive the gift Santa Claus has prepared for you!
(
from the publisher)

If you are looking for a faith-based book to read to a child in your life, here is a new one that is currently only available in limited quantities. Some of the words are more difficult for young readers, although I am delighted to see a book that is not limited to the most simple vocabulary; I considered that a huge plus as I read through the book. On the negative, some of the syntax seems off a bit. It is reminiscent of the Twas The Night Before Christmas poetic style throughout most of the book, but the meter and structure are missing in parts.

What is most important to me, though, is the message of the tale. In a culture that is becoming increasingly commercial, the birth of the Christ Child and the gift He is to each of us is getting lost. Some want to ignore or downplay that Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ and there are others who want no hint of Santa in the message of Christmas and see him as a form of adversary. Instead of making this Jesus vs. Santa Claus, Mrs. Amos weaves a tale of Santa as a servant of Christ who wants to share His love rather than the symbol of consumerism or as being the "reason for the season" himself. I love the way you can use this book to teach your child that we are each here to spread the love of Jesus to others and using Santa as an example.

Visit the  Mystical Rose Inspirations website to find out more and to place an order for this beautiful book. It has a deluxe padded hardcover with gold foil embossing & laminate cover. The size is 8.5x11, it has 40 pages. Also, please make sure you Like Gift Of A Servant on Facebook. The newly released trailer I have embedded below will you a better idea of the story and allow you to see some of the beautiful illustrations by David W. Luebbert. I think will soon become a treasured book to be read each Christmas season for generations to come.

Stressed-Less Living by Tracie Miles

Stressed-Less Living: Finding God's Peace In Your Chaotic World by Tracie Miles is a book that leads the reader to Scripture for help in overcoming anxiety, fear, and insecurities that threaten to overwhelm her daily. Taking the leap of faith and fully trusting God can be scary, but it has been proven over and over that He is with us each step of our journey. However, we do sometimes need those reminders when others, and even we ourselves, tell us that we are responsible for taking care of everything. We can learn to "not only strive, but thrive in spite of it through faith in the promises of God." As a former 'stress-aholic', Tracie can certainly speak with authority on the topic of letting stress consume your life. While trying to juggle the needs of herself, her husband and children, a corporate job, church activities, and a myriad of other duties connected with her life, stress was getting the best of her. This book is about how she made the decision to trust God in her circumstances.

There was much to learn from this book, and I needed several of these reminders of what I already know. One sentence that I need to be reminded of frequently is, "if the devil can't hinder our relationship with God by making us immoral, he will simply make us busy." That is a trap I find myself falling into, no matter what stage of life I am in. Distractions often begin first thing in the morning, and before I know it, I can barely hold my eyes open...and realize that I barely spent any time with God. Or, I may have spent time discussing my needs or even the needs of others, but did I just rest in His presence? I am getting better, but old habits are hard to break. I love the questions she asks at the end of each chapter, but the Scripture she lists are an even greater treasure. Speaking of that, she told one story that gave me an idea of a perfect gift for myself and for friends. The book is worth it just for that idea alone, but this still one I recommend for anyone who is dealing with anxiety and worries.

Leafwood Publishers generously not only sent me a copy to review, but also sent 2 copies for me to giveaway!! All they asked in return is that I give a fair and honest review of their book. So, please enter the Rafflecopter contest (not affiliated with Facebook, btw) below:

Kyle Sherman: Hear Me cd

October 9, 2012 is the release date for HEAR ME  BY Kyle Sherman and I have 2 words for everyone: BUY IT!! I admit that when I was offered the chance to review it, the description sounded good, but I was so swamped that it shifted to the back of my mind. Then, due to the hospitalization and ultimate death of a beloved relative, writing reviews left my mind. A few days ago, I saw the cd sitting there and knew I needed to fulfill my obligation. I was ministered to through this cd so deeply I knew it was a "God-thing" that it arrived when it did. There were songs that soothed me and songs that rocked, but all appealed to me. I have listened to the entire cd several times over the past few days, and know that will be placed with my other favorites. My taste is music is very eclectic, and there are several styles here that appeal to me.

Here is The Greatest Tear from the cd:

Texas native, Kyle Sherman, is signed to a new label, RayLynn Records. For those of you familiar with Lifechurch.TV, Kyle was a full-time worship leader at their campus in Fort Worth, TX, under renowned pastor/author Craig Groeschel. I know I am expecting to hear a lot more from him in the future and am definitely a fan. His various links, so you can learn more about him are listed below:

Once again, I can also offer a GIVEAWAY!! Enter the contest to win a copy of your own!!

Rise Of The Elgen by Richard Paul Evans

Rise of the Elgen continues the story of Michael Vey, Taylor, Ostin, and the others who call themselves the Electroclan. You may recall that not only was Michael born with Tourette's syndrome, but also with astonishing electrical powers. In book 2, the Electroclan, made up of those with special powers and 3 friends without, have escaped from Elgen Academy in Pasadena. But Michael's mother needs rescued from her kidnappers and the Elgen are still determined to destroy this group of friends.

By using their powers, wits, skills, and Ostin's brain, they manage to escape an Elgen traps, but also must choose whether to trust a mysterious voice. They learn that Michael's mom is being held in the jungles of Peru, and that the Elgen plan on global dominance by controlling the world's supply of inexpensive, natural energy. Michael will stop at nothing to rescue his mom and Hatch is equally determined to stop and destroy Michael Vey.

Take a look at the trailer for Rise Of The Elgen:

This is an exciting read for teens and adults. I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I did the first, but I am not a fan of rats or snakes and both were featured too prominently for my personal taste. However, to see the continued growth of the characters and see them work together to resolve personal differences and challenges to achieve their goals are a good example of teamwork. Of course, trying to stay alive and rescue a parent from an evil genius are not part of most of our lives, but books are an excellent and safe way to have an adventure. This series is well written, imaginative, and each does leave you anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.

The publisher graciously sent 2 copies of this book for me to offer as a giveaways. Please enter the Rafflecopter contest:

I received this material from the publisher for a fair and honest review. There was no requirement that I write a favorable review and all opinions are my own.

Cultivation Generation: My Foundation

June 19th brings the newest release from Vineyard Music. A multi-layered mix of guitars. banjos, synthesizers and voices combine to bring you My Foundation. Recorded LIVE at the Cultivation Generation Vineyard young adult conference, this brings you the feeling of being with a crowd of fellow believers as you are ushered into a time of worshiping God. These are very upbeat songs, and many have a pop style that many will find appealing. Listen to the video below for a sampling of the music and comments from some of the musicians.

My Foundation from Vineyard Resources on Vimeo.

I admit that there was a bit too much "pop" for my personal tastes. I liked some of the songs by themselves, but I didn't want to hear quite so many at one time. However there were a couple on there that I truly fell in love with. God Don't Never Change  and The Bridegroom really blew me away. I am hoping to hear more songs like them on future albums.

GIVEAWAY: Propeller is offering a download copy of this cd to one of my readers. To enter, just let me know on the blog. Drawing will be held Friday, June 29, 2012 at 9pm CDT.

The Genesis Code dvd

Kerry Wells (Kelsey Sanders), a college journalist and committed Christian with an effervescent personality, has been assigned to do a story on Blake Truman (Logan Bartholomew) the college’s newest and very popular hockey superstar. As a relationship between them begins to develop Kerry finds that Blake, who hides behind a tough and independent façade, is actually struggling through a difficult personal crisis and that he bears the cross of a secret he has kept hidden for years. Blake rebuffs Kerry's suggestion that prayer might help ease his burden; he is convinced that modern science completely disproves the Bible, especially the opening verses of Genesis. Kerry — who is herself suddenly confronted with a challenge to her faith on another front — sets out to prove that science and Genesis are not in conflict and her quest leads to a startling revelation. Could it be that what science teaches us about creation and the Story as told in Genesis are both true! ~ (from the dvd cover)

Creation is a subject that has long been debated. There are too many theories, and it all creates conflict and confusion. I believe God created. It has never mattered to me how He chose to do or how long it actually took. Science interests me, but most of it overwhelms me, so I had a bit of trepidation when I saw what this film is actually about. (I glanced at it and thought it was a sports film; I like those.)

The Genesis Code turned out to be a fun film with quirky characters, witty dialogue, and an intriguing plot. The marriage of Biblical accounts of creation and scientific evidence made sense to me, and I could embrace that theory. However, I am not qualified to say if it is accurate; I just know I enjoyed the presentation. Some of the subplots were more plausible that others, but it gave you a chance to get to know more about the characters and establish a relationship with them.

Of course, the cast of Hollywood veterans who appear in the film make it even more engaging. I would have wanted this dvd just for Ernest Borgnine alone! Other fabulous actors in this film are Louise Fletcher, Fred Dalton Thompson, Lance Henriksen, Rance Howard, Catherine Hicks, Ben Murphy, and Susan Blakely. Along with marvelous actors, there are some awesome graphics. While there were a few parts in the film I wasn't satisfied with, it made me laugh and it made me think: both of those make this a film I would recommend.

I Couldn't Love You More by Matt Hammitt & Jason Ingram

I Couldn't Love You More, by Matt Hammitt and Jason Ingram is a book written not only as an expression of a parent's love for their child, but also to share with younger children about Christ's unconditional love for His children. Matt wrote the song, "I Couldn't Love You More" (Every Falling Tear) soon after his son, Bowen, was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare congenital defect. This book, beautifully illustrated by Polona Lovsin, is based on that song.

This over-sized book is filled with bright colorful illustrations of animals that are sure to delight any child. Simple sentences that are great not only for those shorter attention spans also make this book ideal for reading to a young child, or for a new reader to practice their skills on. Most important, though, is the message that assures the child not only of a parent's love, but that Jesus loves them! Another fantastic reason for wanting to purchase this book is that a portion of the proceeds are donated to Whole Hearts Foundation!! The opportunity to share the love of Jesus with a child you love, plus contribute to an organization that provides help for children suffering from congenital heart disease and their families. See the Whole Hearts video to learn more.

The Forgiven Duke by Jamie Carie

Tethered by her impulsive promise to marry Lord John Lemon - the path of least resistance - Alexandria Featherstone sets off toward Iceland in search of her parents with a leaden heart. A glimpse of her guardian, the Duke of St. Easton - the path less traveled by - on Dublin’s shore still haunts her.
Will he come after her? Will he drag her back to London, quelling her mission to rescue her treasure-seeking parents, or might he decide to throw caution to the wind and choose Foy Pour Devoir: “Faith for Duty,” the St. Easton motto. The Featherstone motto Valens et Volens: “Willing and Able,” beats in her heart and thrums through her veins. She will find her parents and find their love, no matter the cost.
The powerful yet wing-clipped Duke of St. Easton has never known the challenge that has become his life since hearing his ward’s name. Alexandria Featherstone will be the life or the death of him. Only time and God’s plan will reveal just how much this man can endure for the prize of love. (~ back book cover)

The Forgiven Duke is the 2nd book in the "Forgotten Castles" trilogy written by Jamie Carie. The misadventures of Alexandria Featherstone did not cause me to smile as much as they did in The Guardian Duke, but there was still the excitement and tension that kept me glued to the pages. Alex's determination to search for her parents, no matter what or whom wants to stop her is as strong as ever. Gabriel's pursuit of his recalcitrant ward while battling the Prince Regent, Spaniards, his deafness, and growing love for Alexandria is a great example of perseverance against all odds. The nonstop action and the emotional entanglements make this a good read. It is faith-based with no foul language or explicit scenes, so it is suitable for any age group. Plus, I enjoy Regency-era books and think they are fun to read. This one also ends on a cliff-hanger, so I look forward to the opportunity to read the final book when it comes out.

The 5 Love Languages Of Children

All children have the need to feel loved in able to do their best. Sometimes, though, there is such a disconnect between your interaction with one another that you feel like you are not even speaking the same language. That is the concept of Dr. Gary Chapman’s groundbreaking Five Love Languages series which has helped millions of couples communicate love more clearly, and Dr. Ross Campbell M.D. has applied the innovative system to children as well. The 5 Love Languages of Children gives practical suggestions for learning how your children interpret love and creating a sense of security in which they can thrive.

There may be several ways of expressing love to another, but you need to recognize whether your child best relates to Physical Touch, Words Of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts Of Service, or Gifts. Not only can it clear up a few misunderstandings, but  goes a long way toward helping your child develop healthy positive relationships with you and with others. Anyone with children knows that they are seldom alike, so it only makes sense that they have their own idea of what love means to them.

This book also contains helpful ideas on using a child's main love language to help with discipline, anger, and interacting with others. There are also chapters on marriage and specifically for single parents. There are many helpful ideas to help you to strengthen your bond and create a healthier relationship with each individual child, including a fun Love Language Mystery Game to play. Beyond The Farthest Star book giveaway #2

A twist of fate brings the national spotlight to a forgotten Texas town and a once famous preacher has an opportunity to regain his former glory or seize one last chance to restore his fractured family. Narrated by his fifteen-year-old daughter, we watch as Adam Wells, a minister driven by the prospect of achieving greatness as the next nationally-syndicated TV Evangelist lays down his opportunity at “celebrity” and even his own life in order to become something even greater... A loving husband and father to his wife and daughter.

That is the premise of  Beyond The Farthest Star ...both the film, and the novel that has been adapted by Brock and Bodie Thoene.  The reviews have been overwhelmingly in favor of the book, and I know that is has certainly whet my appetite to see these characters come to life on the big screen later this year. Although the Thoene's books are frequently historical fiction, I do love this contemporary novel that is based on the screenplay by Andrew Librizzi. There are many scarred and hurting people in this book, but the message of hope is truly inspiring.
Check out the audio of the first chapter, read by Bodie Thoene:

This Zondervan novel in E-Book, Paperback and Audio versions are available at all major online sources and major booksellers, including Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Christian Book Distributors

 .
                                      *****GIVEAWAY*****

I also have a paperback copy available to give away. Just leave a comment on the blog to be entered into a random drawing. The drawing will be held on Wed., April 11, 2012 at 11am CDT.

Healing Your Church Hurt

Anyone who has ever been part of a church has most likely gone through a church hurt. If you haven't, you probably know someone who has had a bitter experience.  New York Times bestselling author Stephen Mansfield suffered with his own church pain when he was a pastor; In the pages of  Healing Your Church Hurt ( previously published as ReChurch), he walks us through, not only his own pain, but gives examples of others who have experienced this.

Whether you were in a position of leadership, or an attendee who chose to not be involved with other church activities, or somewhere in between, the chances of being hurt are present, and can make a powerful impact. Hurts do not have to be a permanent wedge between you and the church or your relationship with God. It also does not matter whether you were wronged, or the one who caused the problem; the point is to seek out the place where you are serving God for His pleasure. We too often set our expectations on what feels right to us, and then blame the church when others fail to reach our standards and wants. I especially liked the chapter that discussed what attitude you should have if it does become necessary for you to find another community of believers to join. The pastor, the building, the music, the opportunities, etc---each may make for your happiness, but, what happens when circumstances change? What are you looking for when you seek another church? More importantly, are you working through your pain and using this as growth and maturity? Stephen looks at church hurts from a variety of angles and offers comfort and constructive criticism in order to facilitate healing.

This book is great whether it is you going through the hurt and healing process, or to give to another who needs it. Make sure you check out the following:
