MY REVIEW:

Christmas at the Cabin is a fun movie to watch! Michelle (Marianne Haaland), a very focused individual person who loves a good plan...and expects things to go by her plan, needs to recover from a stressful situation at work. Her PLAN is a relaxing visit to their winter cabin with husband Josh (Corey Cannon) and sister Poppy (Sharon Oliphant). The car sliding into a snowbank gave this vacation a bumpy start, but next is the shocking discovery of Josh's old college roommate Gus (Stacey Sheffield) staying at the cabin, uninvited. Michelle is not pleased. 

Tensions rise as Michelle struggles with clumsy accidents, nothing going as planned and her continued clashes with Gus. When everyone appears to be against her, she goes rushing outside in a snowstorm, soon getting lost and trapped. Her rescuer, Luke (Todd Terry), shares soup and wisdom with Michelle to help her realize that she doesn't have to control everything. As a person who fights my own control-freak tendencies, I loved this part of the film. Luke leads her back to the cabin and to a joy-filled reunion and fresh start for everyone. If you enjoy a film that has fun, friends, family, and faith, you will love "Christmas at the Cabin." The characters and the actors who portrayed them were all fabulous, plus beautiful scenery and original music add to the pure enjoyment.

MY REVIEW: Church People is one of my favorite films! Not only does it have many hilarious moments, but it also has a significant message that resounds with me. I don't often cry in movies, but this one deeply touched me. It brings the viewer back to the heart of worship and the true meaning in the message of the Cross.

When Church People was released in 2021, one of the major concerns and questions I saw was, "Does this movie mock Christians and megachurches?" Absolutely not!! It does address the "rock star" celebrity that sometimes takes over, but it does so with love and a huge dose of humor. And reminds us that the simple message of the gospel has an eternal impact on the lives of others... even without smoke machines, swag, stunts, and superstar leaders.

I love all of the actors involved, the writing is fantastic, wonderful soundtrack, and the director is amazing! (Trivia: Director Christopher Shawn Shaw makes a cameo as a stagehand.) Scroll down to read a synopsis of "Church People."

Weary from the showiness and materialism that has

overtaken his ministry efforts, Guy (Thor Ramsey) goes on a journey to get back in touch with the heart of ministry and be a real role model to his youth group kids. He makes the difficult decision to cut short his speaking tour managed by his money-focused agent (Donald Faison) after realizing that his reputation has become more fame based than Gospel-driven.

But when Guy attempts to return to regular youth ministry, he is thrust into the throes of dissuading the youth group from performing a strange and potentially blasphemous stunt for the upcoming Easter service, starring a young, zealous new Believer, Blaise. In attempting to manage his youth group while navigating an unexpected love interest in the Senior Pastor’s daughter (Erin Cahill) and being a new father to his grown daughter, Guy ultimately rediscovers and puts on a powerful presentation of why we all need to put our hope in Jesus and not in ourselves.

MY REVIEW: Church People is a film I have been looking forward to and it lived up to my hopes. A laugh-out-loud comedy that touches on some absurdities but also highlights the heart of the message of following Jesus. While most of the action and humor of the film are exaggerations, there is a problem in some ministries with "rock star" personalities who can develop a cult-like following, losing focus on the simple message of salvation. Thor Ramsey is wonderful as the Youth Pastor who sincerely wants to teach about Christ, but finds himself getting caught up in his own popularity.

Pastor Skip Finney (Michael Monks) is the tie-dye wearing lead pastor who loves the crowds and coming up with new stunts and ideas to fill every seat in his huge church. When he goes too far with a Good Friday/Easter production idea, it's up to Guy Sides (Ramsey) to try to bring Pastor Skip and his encouragers back to the heart of worship and the true meaning of the message of the cross. Toss in a romantic interest with the pastor's daughter, a rival (Joey Fatone), a zealous new Believer, and the unexpected reunion with his long-lost daughter... and chaos ensues.

You've also got Stephen Baldwin as the ultimate church greeter, plus William Baldwin and Chynna Phillips as clueless parents. Director Christopher Shawn Shaw pulls all of the characters together into a fun tale I enjoyed watching. As with all good satire, there is some truth mixed in with the exaggerations, and a lesson to be learned. Church People has also been selected as 1 of 5 films nominated for a "K-LOVE Fan Award" for Best Film and Television Impact.

Heaven Bound

Ted (Michael Joiner) and Josie (Nancy Stafford) have a perfect marriage and a perfect life. His career as a successful dog food marketer has moved them into a whole new tax bracket... until the fateful day when he suddenly makes a mistake that costs him his job and makes him the most hated man in the country. Josie is already very unhappy, but her frustration reaches the breaking point when her wealthy boss confides he selling all he owns to support a charity he is creating in memory of his late wife. So she concocts a plan to steal the jewelery her boss has hidden in order to pay their debts. Accompanied by her lazy little brother Moochie (Torry Martin), Ted and Josie attempt to pull off a caper but their plans quickly fall apart when Doc (Danny Vinson) realizes he has a captive audience to share the plan of salvation with before he dies. 

Heaven Bound is a fun, family-friendly film that has a serious message at its inner core, but is wrapped in layers of pure laughter. Many of the things that the secular world mocks about Christianity are highlighted in this film...because it's also things we laugh at ourselves. Of course, it's not laughing at the central message of following Jesus, but at some of the ways the gospel is presented. Just as it seems things may take a serious turn, the humor comes through. Joiner, Stafford, Martin, and Vinson all excel at their craft, and each are perfect in their roles. There is also a hysterical scene with Victoria Jackson, as well as a very funny scene at a coffee shop that features Denny Brownlee. Written by Marshall Younger, Torry Martin, and Rene Gutteridge, and directed by Gabe McCauley, this film is a must-see for anyone wanting a night of laughter.Learn more at HeavenBoundthemovie.com

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is a comedy about faith and forgiveness. Gavin Stone (Brett Dalton) had international fame as a child star, but his career faded as his party life style got out of control. When his latest escapade, while visiting his hometown, lands him before a judge who demands he does community service at a local mega- church, Gavin must also stay with his estranged father (Neil Flynn). 

Discovering that the church is planning their annual Passion Play, he thinks he is a shoo-in for the starring role of Jesus. Assuring Pastor Allan Richardson (D.B. Sweeney) that he only stumbled, but is definitely a Christian---a requirement for all castmembers. Convincing the director---the pastor's daughter (Anjelah Johnson-Reyes) is more difficult, but she agrees to give him a chance. As Gavin struggles to make sense of the play, he discovers that the most important role of his life is far from Hollywood.

My Review: I confess that "fish out of water" stories almost always appeal to me, and The Resurrection of Gavin Stone certainly lives up to my hopes. The relationships with Gavin's dad and with Kelly are powerful as trust builds hesitantly, but Gavin's new trio of friends (Shawn Michaels, Tim Frank, and Patrick Gagnon) are hysterical as they help each other in unfamiliar territory. And, the scene with Torry Martin as a radio host is very funny. I have watched the movie several times and still laugh at the same things each time...and am impacted with a fresh look at familiar scripture. The scene with the "rich, young ruler" (Liam Matthews) is particularly poignant. Director Dallas Jenkins and writer Andrea Gyertson Nasfell, along with an excellent cast and crew produced a film that has roots in truth, great comedic timing, heart-tugging moments, and appealing to a wide audience.

Run On features David A. R. White, Tommy Blaze, and Brad Stine in this theatrical comedy. Each give a humorous, yet poignant history of their own prodigal journey. Although told from personal experiences and very different backgrounds, they all have the same theme of trying to escape and run from God.

David A.R. White, shares his story of how he left his Mennonite community in Kansas and came to Hollywood at the age of 19.

Tommy Blaze, a comedy veteran, tells his story of his marriage difficulty and trying to get a divorce that God wouldn’t allow.

 Brad Stine, “God’s Comic”, one of the most well known Christian comics in the country, shares his experience of being called to “ministry” and ending up in the belly of a whale.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son is one of my favorite stories in the Bible and these 3 versions these men share from their lives is told in a manner that made me laugh...and cry. Tears may seem odd since this is a stand-up comedian venue, but laughter and hope are what remains. This is one that you will not want to miss!!

Brother White

David A.R. White, Reginald VelJohnson, Jackee Harry, and Ray Wise star with Bruce Davison and Victoria Jackson in this heartwarming fish out of water comedy. James White (White) is one of dozens of associate pastors at a mega church in Southern California under the tutelage of television evangelist Johnny Kingman (Wise). He always longed to have his own church and jumps at the opportunity to become pastor of the impoverished Divine Faith Apostolic Church in Atlanta. His wife (Andrea Logan White) and two children aren't very enthusiastic about his assignment. Neither is the congregation itself, but they will have to learn to trust each other and pull together to save the church from a corrupt banker anxious to foreclose. It will take a musical miracle, supplied by BeBe Winans himself, to save them all in this heartfelt, family-friendly comedy.

Brother White was a bit of a disappointment to me. I honestly do enjoy a "fish out of water" type comedy and had high hopes for this one. There are certainly moments that are a lot of fun, but this seems to have a bit of a rushed feeling to it. All of the cast and crew are in films I love, but this just wasn't quite up to what I usually find. I kept getting lost in the time frame. Did all of this happen in a week? There were just things that didn't make sense to me. I think it would be a fun television series, and the film could be revamped to set the stage...but too much was crammed into the film without a smooth flow. I really did laugh (in a good way!) but wish this one had been tweaked a bit better before being released.

Last year I read the Fully Alive book, and it really touched me. When I think back on the impetus it gave me to start moving, and live my life more fully and alive...I need to read it again. The film doesn't have quite the same impact for me, but I really did love it. My favorite form of humor is story-telling, and Ken has mastered the art of telling a tale that will have anybody laughing. Bringing Up Bobby

BRINGING UP BOBBY is one of the more unique faith-based films I have seen and I found it to be an absolutely refreshing change of pace.

Meet the Wylers-a family unlike any other, and way too much like your own! For a dozen years, James has served as both big brother and surrogate parent, trusting God for help in raising his three siblings - and hoping for a date some day! Andrea is hoping for more than her fair share. Dennis (make that The Dennis) just needs enough to keep the anarchists at bay (don't ask). And nothing would please Bobby more than just to impress Liz, the new girl in school. Mix in a hidden stash of cash, an attractive lawyer, and the infamous War Table, and you have a quirky story about family, faith, and friendship. (from IMDb) These 3 brothers and one sister are each unique and bring a fresh perspective into the family. Bobby is the one who is still trying to discover who he is and the search is both funny and intriguing.

The strong faith-based message is  presented as James, the oldest, challenges Bobby to discover for himself what he truly believes to be Truth and his own relationship with Jesus. The most astonishing thing about this film to me is how topics such as faith, family, friendship, neglect, addictions, greed, relationships, etc. are all handled in a manner that is not only  poignant and truthful, but absolutely hilarious! The first time I saw it, I was a bit puzzled by it but the characters and story did keep my attention. I loved it when I watched it again. (Some people like no prior knowledge of a film; I rarely enjoy a film the first viewing unless I have a lot of details.) The bottom line is that the Wyler family and their friends are people you will love meeting and you definitely will not forget them!
