Defined is a simple yet deep book that guides the reader on the path to discover their identity in Christ. I love the short chapters that give a solid truth that is easy to grasp, but that also share other Scripture the reader can turn to for a further understanding of what the authors are saying. There is also a short prayer at the end of each chapter that you can personalize for yourself. Divided into 5 parts, this makes it even easier to help each person "overcome" the doubts and fears that have built up within the individual. There are also group discussion questions at the end of the book so this book can easily be used in a small group setting.

I enjoy the Kendrick Brothers movies and find them a source of encouragement, especially for believers who are facing trials and temptations. This book is a fabulous resource for those who have seen Overcomer. Seeing the film first is not necessary. It is inspired by the movie, but not about the movie. However, like the characters in the film, we sometimes get so caught up in our lives, especially the failures, that we forget about who we are in Christ. The Scriptures, stories, and wisdom in this book are sure to make an impact. I highly recommend it.

Radiant - Priscilla Shirer

Did you know that God’s light can shine through every facet of your identity? The book is less than 150 pages, but each page will touch the heart of the reader and make a positive impact. Priscilla Shirer is one of my favorite Bible teachers and this book appeals to me in spite of being well beyond the age of the intended readers. I wish there had been a similar resource available during my teen and early adult years. It is divided into 4 parts to walk you through various seasons and each ends with something To Think about and To Take Away. There are also paragraphs encouraging you to Read This, Say This, and Believe This. The outer beauty of the book (I love the purple cover with the gold lettering!) makes me smile, but the inner beauty being taught within the book makes this an excellent book for a young woman.

Radiant is published by B&H Publishing as a resource for further study with the film, Overcomer, by the Kendrick Brothers. Priscilla has a role in this film as a caring high school principal. I also highly recommend you see the movie!

Unexpected: Leave Fear Behind - Christine Caine

The unexpected, by its very nature, can have a tremendous impact. Sometimes it even shakes our faith, causing us to become defensive and fearful of living out our life fully trusting God. However, that does not have to be your reaction. In Unexpected: Leave Fear Behind, Christine Caine uses compelling stories along with practical advice to offer encouragement. Leave behind the anxiety and move forward in faith, knowing that the unexpected WILL happen, but you can be confident that God is fully in control and will see you through anything.

MY REVIEW: Each of us has unexpected things occur in our lives and we are seldom prepared. Christine Caine received a diagnosis of cancer that rearranged plans she had made for her life and this book opens with her story. She doesn't offer easy steps of dealing with these changes but does tell the reader how she trusted Jesus during the ordeal.

But this is more than Christine's story. She also shares many other stories of people who have had their lives turned upside down. We are given a peek into how God used circumstances and other people to help each during the difficult times and, even to prepare for their future. Caine gives many examples of the hope to be found and the restoration of lives to a 'new normal' that is meaningful.

I highly recommend this book to all. No one goes through life without facing the unexpected, whether minor or major, and we all need the reminder that we have a God who is with us at all times. The message of comfort, strength, hope, and healing reminds us to face our fear by trusting God as He leads us through the trials we face. What is unexpected by us is known by God and Christine will help you fight the fear you are facing and move forward.

My Review: I confess, I was unsure when asked to review this one. I have never been a fan of wrestling, so I seemed to be an unlikely person to ask. Because of movies, I did recognize Andre the Giant (Princess Bride) and Shawn Michaels (The Resurrection of Gavin Stone)...and other names were familiar because my kids watched in the 80s and I remember hearing them talk about the wrestlers.

Actually, I found The Price of Fame interesting. I was more intrigued by the themes of forgiveness and redemption. Healing the wounds of a marriage that could have easily broken is an issue that can resonate with nearly anyone. And, while I did not convert to a wrestling fan, the behind-the scenes look at that world did keep my interest. Fans will certainly enjoy it, but this autobiographical documentary will keep the interest of others too.

I really liked the film and found it to be more in-depth than I expected and certainly more than a little racing movie. When it comes to the unknown territory of having a baby, moms-to-be have nearly unending resources to plan and execute a healthy pregnancy and navigate those first months and years as a parent with confidence. New dads? Not so much. They want to get in the game too, but, says Super Bowl champion Benjamin Watson, "I could find clearer direction for putting together a baby swing than for taking care of a newborn child."

The New Dad's Playbook is every man's game plan to being the best partner and the best father, from pre-season (preparing for fatherhood) to Super Bowl (birth) to post-season (after baby is home). It helps men understand what their wives are going through physically and emotionally during and after pregnancy, allowing them to support their most important teammate. It tells men what to expect when their baby is home--and what to do when the unexpected happens. This tell-it-like-it-is book will take men from just winging it to winning it. (publisher)

The book was actually quite good. Watson's advice was practical and answered many questions guys may have. It was an honest look at pregnancy and fatherhood from a male perspective, including mistakes he made, thoughtful things he did for his wife, and an acknowledgment that each pregnancy is different. So, what works with one, may not with another, but the important thing is to work it out.

The importance of the parents working together as a team was an emphasis I really liked. Speaking of teamwork, the football references are a theme to the layout of the book. I am more of a casual fan, but I knew what he was talking about. But, if you are buying this for a dedicated football fan, it will be something completely relatable. I actually thought it was a fun set-up considering his football career.

Some suggestions are out of the price range for many young couples having a child, but some are adaptable. But, the practical advice and explanations of some of the things to expect or to consider are priceless information. It's not a long book, and it's easy to read---IF you are giving it to someone who will actually read it. However, it's a good book to have on the shelves for an expectant father to browse through during a pregnancy, and it is set up in a way to concentrate on a section at a time. Great book for any man who is about to become a father, whether for the first time or already experienced.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is a comedy about faith and forgiveness. Gavin Stone (Brett Dalton) had international fame as a child star, but his career faded as his party life style got out of control. When his latest escapade, while visiting his hometown, lands him before a judge who demands he does community service at a local mega- church, Gavin must also stay with his estranged father (Neil Flynn). 

Discovering that the church is planning their annual Passion Play, he thinks he is a shoo-in for the starring role of Jesus. Assuring Pastor Allan Richardson (D.B. Sweeney) that he only stumbled, but is definitely a Christian---a requirement for all castmembers. Convincing the director---the pastor's daughter (Anjelah Johnson-Reyes) is more difficult, but she agrees to give him a chance. As Gavin struggles to make sense of the play, he discovers that the most important role of his life is far from Hollywood.

My Review: I confess that "fish out of water" stories almost always appeal to me, and The Resurrection of Gavin Stone certainly lives up to my hopes. The relationships with Gavin's dad and with Kelly are powerful as trust builds hesitantly, but Gavin's new trio of friends (Shawn Michaels, Tim Frank, and Patrick Gagnon) are hysterical as they help each other in unfamiliar territory. And, the scene with Torry Martin as a radio host is very funny. I have watched the movie several times and still laugh at the same things each time...and am impacted with a fresh look at familiar scripture. The scene with the "rich, young ruler" (Liam Matthews) is particularly poignant. Director Dallas Jenkins and writer Andrea Gyertson Nasfell, along with an excellent cast and crew produced a film that has roots in truth, great comedic timing, heart-tugging moments, and appealing to a wide audience.

My Review: I must confess that I was very pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed this movie. I agreed to watch it in advance since many family members love racing and I thought it may be a movie several of them would enjoy. Fantastic performances by the actors! Andrew Cheney (Beyond the Mask) as Sean Weathers and Gary Graham (Renegades, Star Trek: Enterprise) as Jack Reed are amazing in their roles of two flawed men who have made mistakes, but need each other as they each deal with grief and guilt. Faith Renee Kennedy is phenomenal is her role as Gracie and I expect to see much more of her. Who doesn't love Robert Amaya? This is not one of his more comical roles, but his trademark humor is a part of the film. Cameron Arnett, Isaiah Stratton, Portia Cue....and, honestly, all of the actors were wonderful. This is the first film that Judd Brannon has directed, and he did very well. Writers Missy Reedy and Sarah Inabnit put together a fascinating film that centered on forgiveness, but used fatherhood, friendship, and foster care as elements in a richly developed story.

There were a few moments where things seemed a bit rushed or I would think, "But what about....?" as I watched, but it kept my attention and I don't remember rolling my eyes or deeply sighing in frustration either. Those are good signs for me. By all means, bring this film to your nearest theater if it is not scheduled already. It has a powerful message in an interesting story and there are several aspects that will lead to a good discussion. I definitely recommend Champion!

Life in Season - Vanessa Hunt/Heather Patterson

‘Life in Season: Celebrating the Moments That Fill Your Heart and Home’ by Heather Patterson and Vanessa Hunt. Heather and Vanessa are sisters who created At the Picket Fence, a website dedicated to providing a place where women can share, care, and inspire one another.

It's a nice "coffee table" book or gift for a friend. The outside cover is beautiful and it is filled with beauty inside also. The book is divided into the four seasons and is filled with stories to fit each, along with recipes and crafts. I enjoyed reading the stories. Using personal anecdotes, and Scripture, they each contained a message that was inspirational and educational---in a fun way. I loved the lessons to be learned from them.

The recipes included looked like they were probably doable. I do not enjoy cooking, so there were none that tempted me. But, I have friends who love cooking and would love making these special treats to share with family and friends. There are also several craft projects that look adorable. My craftiness is solidly in the pre-schooler's art project class, so none of them are for my limited skills. But, I am not the potential market for this book, so I can't speak for how easy they are.

If you or a friend love crafting, cooking, and stories that inspire and are completely relatable and relational, I recommend this book.

When Joey became pregnant, they decided to take a year off and simplify life for a year, living on their small farm. My Review: I seldom cry when watching movies, but this one did move me to tears several times, for varying reasons. To be honest, I hesitated when offered the chance to review the DVD since I knew so little about Joey+Rory. Of course, I had seen the stories trending and knew that Joey had passed away---I had even prayed for them frequently during her illness, but I don't think I had ever heard even 1 song by them until watching the DVD. Plus, knowing of her passing, I was not sure if this was something I would want to see.

I was wrong! Rather than a melancholy story of a life cut too short, this DVD is a celebration of life. Nothing is sugar-coated, but the viewer is drawn into the lives of these people in such a way that there are as many tears of joy as there are of sorrow. Watching them LIVE their lives rather than just accepting defeats and falling into despair is a true encouragement for others. Of course, their faith in God as their sustainer and hope is a message that shines through. I do recommend you see this for yourself and share it with others. In the midst of sorrow, there is also inspiration and hope for this life and beyond.

The Bible is a book that is actually 66 books in one volume. It contains history, poetry, instruction, but it is also God's love letter to his people. In 66 Ways God Loves You, Jennifer Rothschild goes book by book as she walks with you through the 66 letters from God. 

• In Genesis God Fashions Me With His Hands
• In Proverbs God Offers Me Wisdom More Precious Than Rubies
• In Revelation God Receives Me as His Beloved and Treasured Bride

Those are just 3 examples of how God speaks to His people through His Word. Rothschild gives a short reading that sums up each book, along with Scripture that brings a deeper understanding. Using only a couple of pages for each book, this is a wonderful small devotional to use daily or to use as you read through the Bible. You can begin each book with this concise overview to gain a better understanding of what the Author is saying.

I love it! It is a small book, but it contains a powerful message of God's love for us. It's great that it also reminds me of a favorite song: "He Is" by Aaron Jeoffrey! This book has the same impact, letting me know the different ways God reveals Himself to me. Whether it is used as a reminder, a reassurance or balm to a broken spirit, I highly recommend this. It is also a wonderful gift for a friend or yourself. Definitely 5 stars.

Voiceless

Jesse Dean (Rusty Joiner: Last Ounce of Courage, Dodgeball, Days of Our Lives), a recently discharged soldier and his wife, wife Julia (Jocelyn Cruz: Strike One, This Is Our Time) move to Philadelphia when he takes a job as the outreach leader in the church Julia attended before their marriage. Jesse was not a Christian before meeting Julia, but has fully embraced his new faith and eager to share it with others.

Jesse gets a great start with connecting with his new community, but the presence of an abortion clinic across the street, and encounters with 2 different women who talk to him regarding decisions of whether or not to have an abortion have a tremendous impact on him. The pastor, church members, families of the pregnant women, the police, and even his wife, advise him to back off before he lands in jail.

Despite opposition, Jesse feel compelled to take action on his conviction to be a voice for the Voiceless and talk to those considering entering the abortion clinic. Being supportive of the women whose decision to let their child live is another important step he considers vital after an initial reluctance ends in tragedy. Help comes from a reluctant source--- a neighbor (Susan Moses) becomes a staunch supporter, even as his wife battles her own insecurities and painful memories.

The winner of multiple awards, Voiceless has been honored as Northeast Film Festival’s Best Feature and People’s Choice for Best Feature Film and Best Feature Film from the California Independent Film Festival. Comedian Paul Rodriguez also stars as Virgil with James Russo as Pastor Gil. Voiceless is a very well made film that not only touches on the controversial subject of abortion, but also on taking a stand and remaining firm on your convictions. Of course the story is told from a pro-life point of view, but it clearly shows that even Christians have mixed views on the subject and whether or not they should personally be involved. Elements that I loved were that the entire focus was not only on the unborn child. Many of the people who are in favor of abortion throw out a criticism that pro-lifers are only concerned with the "fetus." (While I don't find that true among the people I know, I do concede that there are people who are unsupportive of the women who choose to give birth, and even the children themselves as they age.) Jesse's total involvement and commitment to help the women who chose Life and his encouragement to others to get involved---to be the "Hands and Feet of Jesus" is an aspect of the film that touched me deeply, and I hope encourages other viewers to walk farther with the women who have more decisions to make after the one to not abort. A helping hand is more than just a hand out. 'Miss Elsie' (Susan Moses) was one of my favorite characters in the film. Jesse and Julia cranky neighbor secretly had a heart of gold and more courage than many as she also makes a decision whether to remain an outsider or get involved with others. 

Honestly, I loved all of the characters in the film (and the actors who portrayed them), since even the ones whose views differed from mine added layers to the film. We get so angry at those who disagree with us or who chose to remain uninvolved that we often fail to see from their perspective. While I remain as adamantly pro-life as ever, I did see how a pro-choice person could reach a different conclusion than me. That small common point can be the talking point (as opposed to the screaming point) that opens a conversation. 

The downside for me was that the film leaned more toward the typical "Christian movie" ending. Not as bad as many, but that may just be me. I do see that it would serve the purpose more...which is to encourage more Christians to get up, get out, get involved, and make a difference. I can't really complain about that. 

The film is going to be in a limited run, but you can check with the website to see if you could bring it to your area; More theaters are being added. If you can, I recommend you go see it. When it comes out on DVD, Buy Voiceless. Whether you are pro, anti, or indifferent about abortion, the movie will show that there is more to the story and that sitting back and ignoring the issue is not the answer. 

Mother & Son: The Respect Effect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

The idea of moms respecting their sons may sound alien to some, but it seems to ignite curiosity across the board. It is easy to relate to the need for all of us to feel a mother’s love, but is that the same thing as respect? Even for young boys, the effect of respect is nothing short of astounding when applied properly.  Moms yearn to learn anything that better helps them with their sons. After all, they love their boys, but many find them more difficult to parent than their girls, especially from age four and up. What makes this all the more urgent is that moms are coaching fathers to love their daughters, but no one has said boo to moms on specific ways to show respect to their sons, at least not in a way that is applicable and fully explained. All realize that little girls need daddy’s love, but who is strongly promoting the truth that little boys (and big ones) need Mom's respect? No wonder mothers feel left in the dark on this topic. My Review: The book has information that is valuable, yet something about it just grated on me as I read it. There seemed to be more than a hint of condescension in the tone when addressing mothers. I thought perhaps I was taking it too personally since I have been aware for decades about the male need for respect, even in little boys. The author kept trying to say how women think to the point I could almost believe I am not female. People, both male and female, are individuals with varying traits. So, to be fair, my annoyance may have colored my reaction to the book.

The word RESPECT is vital to the book but was also overused. Much of the suggested dialogue between a mother and son was stilted, but did give good suggestions and outlines. I come from a different generation, so my experiences may be different than that of a young mom raising a child today. So, this could be a valuable resource for those who are unfamiliar with the male need for respect. And, I know several women who think like the author assumes all women think. Don't get me wrong---there is nothing wrong with those thoughts and personalities, they just aren't universal. And, I am certain that no offense was intended in the writing, especially since Dr. Eggerichs specializes in the importance of showing respect to others. I am sure many will also find the success stories encouraging. Letting your son (and all males in your family) know that you love them is important, too, but letting them know you respect them is essential. And I do respect the time, effort, hard work, and thoughts Dr. Eggerichs put into research and writing this and that he is changing lives and relationships for the better.

Her search for peace takes her on a journey that forces Chloe to confront her past traumas and leads her to cross paths with Josh (Cody Longo, known for NOT TODAY, Hollywood Heights, Nashville), a young man dealing with his own painful loss. Together they find in each other someone they can trust as they seek to unlock a cold-case mystery from years before. But with the authorities blocking the way, Chloe's new-found hope is challenged in this powerful story of faith, triumph and healing.

My Review: Wildflower is a well made suspense film that is rated PG-13 for thematic elements and due to some scenes too intense for younger viewers. The tension increases throughout the film as Chloe has nightmares that are occurring with increased frequency. Unable to trust anyone, and with everyone involved believing that she is delusional and in need of mental health help, Josh chooses to become her friend. Dealing with his own demons of grief and shattered faith that haunt him, his compassion and support of Chloe eases his own journey toward healing and restoration. Trauma, grief, lack of trust, abuse, rejection, and fear are all explored in this film, some in a more subtle message, but leads to a message of hope and healing. The film is good for a conversation-opener for family or small group discussion. I really liked it and give it 4.25 stars. A relative who who was visiting me says it is one of the best films she has ever seen. She watched it several times, and I gave her my copy when she left...but good news below for another reader and movie fan!

My Review: I didn't love this one, nor did I hate it. She wrote in a conversational style that was both humorous and easy to read, but it did not keep my attention either. Ironically, that is partly because I was too busy during the time I was trying to read it and sometimes just really wanted her to get to the point. Don't get me wrong: there was some very sage advice, especially for those who still have children at home. Prioritizing what can and can't be done is critical and it's not necessary for your kids to have all and do all that is available. Worthington does offer tips for those who need to simplify and manage their time better.

I don't know if it's because of the season of life I am in or simply because her lifestyle is so foreign to me, but I simply could not relate to some of the things she was going through and there were also areas that were skimmed over as though they were not relevant. I don't want to give any spoilers, so won't go into details, but there were a couple of times I wish she had been a little more detailed. It's like peaks were hit, but I believe the struggle for many is while in the valley and the climb to get out. I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5.

More: From Messes to Miracles by Tammie Head is her story of how God performed the miraculous in her own life in spite of the mess. Her childhood was filled with neglect and abuse, leading to an "escape" at the age of 15 to sex industry. Life as a stripper and a marriage than ended in divorce at 18. Drugs and alcohol helped her to cope with the mess that was her life, but Tammie felt that there had to be more. She felt that God was calling her to hive her life to Him, but did not know how to do that.

Her boyfriend's mom was the catalyst to helping her see that she could be so much more than what she had settled for, but the birth of her first daughter is what led to a serious search for God. She found Him and was baptized, but spent a couple of years as a rule-follower and doing the right stuff that Christians are supposed to do.

Then she had an encounter with God.

Tammie learned there was more to a relationship with God than being a good church girl. God wants you to love Him and to spend time with Him to gain heart knowledge rather than just head knowledge. She also learned that He did not want her to keep silent about her past. Her "mess" brought a message of the miraculous works God will do when we abandon all parts of our lives to Him.

Her honesty about her fears, failures, and faults gives fresh hope to those who feel they have made too many mistakes for God to accept them. The heartbreak she endured as a child, including decisions she made as a teen, are proof that there is a new life to be found despite your circumstances. And that those experiences can be used to encourage others and to glorify God.

At approximately 150 pages, this is a fairly quick read. I did find some of it to be as bit repetitive, but liked the book overall. I would definitely recommend it to others, especially those who believe their past, or current life, makes them unacceptable to God.

1. What do you want readers to learn from reading your book?

People everywhere are looking for something more. Churched and nonchurched alike. They're in the grocery store aisle behind you, in the nail chair beside you, singing praise songs in front of you, and perhaps in the mirror staring back at you. People feel messy; plagued by looming feelings of ineffectiveness, indifference, depression, and purposelessness. However, all of us were made for more than surviving. Old stale religion never satisfies. Neither do the solutions the world has to offer. What all of us need is an encounter with God that reveals truth and sets our hearts ablaze. I have seen this in my own life as well as in countless lives around me.

2. Your life was a bit of a mess before you came to know Christ. How has He used your story to advance His kingdom?

I have watched God use my story repeatedly as a tenderizing agent for
hardened hearts toward God. People cannot believe what God has done
for me. In turn, I have also been privileged to lead many people to Christ, to the One who changed me. People are glad to know God loves and pursues even the messiest of people.

3. What encouragement do you have for men and women who feel like
their lives are too messy for God to use?

If God can use me, He can use anyone! But even more profound than "He can" is this: He wants to! God specializes in taking the most broken of lives and turning them around for His glory. The Bible is full of broken men and women who, after encountering the Lord, were used dramatically by God and for His kingdom.

4. What encouragement do you have for men and women who are
yearning to have more in their lives?

The more we're longing for, at the end of the day, is God. More of His
presence. More of His love. More of His power. And so on!What I want
men and women to know is God wants "so much more" of us than we
could ever want "so much more" Him. The deal is, we must risk making
more room for God. The key is sitting with Him, soaking Him in, allowing Him to minister to us on a deep level and, lastly, deeply surrendering our lives to Him day-by-day.

5. What are some resources for readers who are ready to take the next
step and start living for more?

I have written a Bible study called Duty or Delight: Knowing Where You
Stand with God. I think that would be a great resource for digging deeper into more of a relationship with God.
