'Beyond' Birthday Giveaway

My birthday is this month and I want to celebrate by giving away a DVD copy of one of my favorite movies. Beyond the Farthest Star is an insightful story that centers on a family that is slowly being destroyed by the inside out due to lack of communication and long-buried secret. Pastor Adam Wells (Todd Terry) was once an internationally known child preacher who has now been reduced to a handful of parishioners since a move to the small town of Leonard, Texas. Maurene (Renee O'Connor), once the high school class valedictorian, now burys her dreams in romance novels and a bottle hidden in her closest, believing God is punishing her for past mistakes. Anne (Cherami Leigh) is attracted to self-harm as she struggles to find worth within herself and a place of her own in the world. When an angry former Senator (Andrew Prine) sets fire the the town's Nativity, the sparks ignite more than just the wooden statues. Lives are changed forever.

BTFS has universal themes that speak to all people and effectively weaves the idea that there is hope in spite of physical or emotional scars. This richly layered story shares a raw honest portrayal of transformation and restoration after hidden secrets are revealed and healing is allowed to begin. Elements of suspense, romance, and political intrigue are combined with multi-dimensional characters to present an escalating tension that intensifies to an explosive climax, and, ultimately, to a satisfying conclusion. This PG-13 rated film also stars Barry Corbin, Tyler Corie, Lou Beatty Jr., William McNamara, Jodie Moore, Shawn Roe, Andrew Sensenig and Jordan Ross. BTFS was written and directed by Andrew Librizzi and executive produced by Benjamin Dane, who also has the role of Sheriff Deputy Jimmy Wilkins.

The film also inspired an updated version of "Beauty For Ashes" by Crystal Lewis, a novel by Bodie and Brock Thoene, and a painting by Thomas Kinkade which was ultimately reimagined by his nephew Zac Kinkade due to Thom's unexpected death.   What Would You Do To Save Your Family?

Plot outline:

A twist of fate brings the national spotlight to a forgotten Texas town and a once famous preacher has an opportunity to either regain his former glory or seize one last chance to restore his fractured family. Narrated by his fifteen-year-old daughter, we watch as Adam Wells, a minister driven by the prospect of achieving greatness as the next nationally-syndicated TV Evangelist, faces the possibility of laying down his opportunity at “celebrity” and even his own life in order to become something even greater... a loving husband and father to his wife and daughter.

Domestic Violence 2

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but is something we should always remain aware of since it sometimes gets swept under the rug due to shame or guilt. Since I am the type who can get a better grasp of things I am unfamiliar with through film or books, I will once again be referring to one of my favorites: Beyond The Farthest Star. Those who have read the novel [by Bodie and Brock Thoene, based on the screenplay by Andrew Librizzi] already know the compelling characters: Jackson Tucker, the abusive father, is a heavy hitter--- of the bottle...but also his words and hands. His troubled teenaged son, Kyle, distrusts others...and the feeling is mutual by many acquainted with him.

Actor Jodie Moore who portrays Jackson in the film, said of his character: " A tenacious hard man: heartbroken, old school, and ornery come to mind. A heavy-handed disciplinarian who drinks a bit too much, with a talented adolescent son who is much like his father: Confrontational, confused and just trying to work things out the best way they can."

 Kyle (Shawn Roe) has only known anger from his father, and feels threatened when his best friend Stephen develops an interest in Anne Wells. Since he has been raised by a bully, he only knows how to strike out in anger; This is why we often see a pattern of abusive behavior continue from generation to generation. Kyle's rage and reaction over his perceived rejection from the one person he felt he could trust leads to a powerful climax in the story, and clearly demonstrates the effects of one who has been raised in an atmosphere of violence.

Domestic Violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), sexual abuse (unwanted or forced sexual activity), and stalking. Although emotional, psychological and financial abuse are not criminal behaviors, they ARE forms of abuse and can lead to criminal violence. Natalie & Jonny Gore

Natalie Gore is listed as Production Staff on the set of Beyond The Farthest Star but she and her brother, Jonny also played a huge role in one of the songs done on the set. In the film, Anne Wells (Cherami Leigh) is the Goth daughter of Pastor Adam and Maureen Wells (Todd Terry, Renee' O'Connor). Anne, along with Steven (Tyler Corie), Kyle (Shawn Roe), and Clifford (Jordan Walker Ross) have a band that plays what Adam refers to as "vampire music".

Writer/director Andrew Librizzi gave a poem to Natalie and Jonny and asked them to write a song for the band. Watch the video to hear Natalie & Jonny talk about it:

Natalie and Jonny are the children of Rob and Toni Escobedo Gore of Faith Fellowship Church of McKinney, TX. In the video below, you can see that their mom also has a beautiful voice as she sings with Natalie...and below that is a funny, loving tribute from Jonny to his mom. :)

Tyler Corie

Tyler Corie is outstanding in his role of Stephen Miller in Pathlight Entertainment's Beyond The Farthest Star. Stephen is attracted to the new girl at school who is very different than the other girls in his small Texas town. His interest in Anne Wells (Cherami Leigh), and his close friendships with troubled teen Kyle (Shawn Roe), and sweetly naive Clifford (Jordan Walker Ross) sets Stephen apart as someone very special in my mind. He appears to be the kind, funny, compassionate, loyal friend that everyone needs...or should be to others.

Depression

Depression is a problem that seems to run rampant at this time of year. Whether it is the pressure of feeling the "holiday spirit" or a myriad of real, or even perceived, problems there is no doubt that the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day can exacerbate emotions. The pressure of trying to live up to expectations or the disconnect from loved ones can increase feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and despair. This can be a time of bonding or a time when everything falls apart.

For teens, there is the added stress of being between childhood and becoming an adult. Everything always seems so much more intense and important during those years. I remember wanting to pull away from family and establish myself as my own person, yet a part still longing to cling to my childhood. At no other time is the heights of exhilaration and the depths of despair more keenly felt. During a season filled with family events, it is so easy to withdraw and no longer feel a part of those you once loved unconditionally. Finding out that your parents are indeed human can be a shock. Admittedly, the parents also wonder what happened to the sweet, pliable child who believed Mom and Dad knew everything and could solve any problem.

Beyond The Farthest Star tells the story of a father desperate to connect with his Goth daughter and regain the love of his wife. The rush of this season pulls us in so many different directions that we often lose sight of those who should matter the most to us. Instead of letting our families know how important they are to us, we concentrate on things that will be quickly forgotten in years to come and neglect what and whom really matters. We have become a culture where families appear to be a throw-away commodity, and we need films such as this to make us re-examine our own priorities. I truly believe this will be a film that can make an impact on the lives of millions.
