The Prince Warriors by Priscilla Shirer

The Prince Warriors is the first in a new trilogy by Priscilla Shirer with Gina Detwiler. Written for upper elementary to middle school aged kids, the book is designed to make the invisible spiritual battles surrounding us come to life in a way that kids can be more aware that there is more to life than what can be seen. Based on Ephesians 6:10-18 (Armor of God), the importance of being prepared for spiritual battle is clearly laid out through the adventures of 2 brothers and their friends. 

Synopsis: As brothers, Xavier and Evan are used to battling each other. But now they’re discovering that there is a much bigger battle going on all around them. And it’s their turn to fight. Xavier, Evan, and their friends have typical lives until they enter a mysterious land called Ahoratos. My Review: Written for middle grade school aged kids, but this middle-aged woman enjoyed the book too! The adventurous stories are certainly appealing to boys and girls from 8-14, but there are truths to be found in the pages of this book for those way beyond those years. Naturally, I tried to read this through the eyes of a child instead of something I would choose for myself, but I did find myself getting caught up in the story and actually read it in one sitting since my curiosity of what would happen next got the better of me.

Storytelliing is an excellent way to teach a truth in a way that sticks with a person and I believe this book will provide lessons that can impact the reader. The fictional world of Ahoratos is an interesting place to explore and the characters created by the authors had a few surprising twists as we learned more about them. I highly recommend the book and I really want to see what will happen in the next 2 in the series.

My Review:This board book is sturdily built to be suitable for a preschooler, and has words to help build a strong faith. The concept of what is written may be difficult for a young child who takes things literally to completely comprehend, yet they build a basic foundation for faith to grow. There are simple words that a young reader can help share the story. And a longer paragraph that an adult can use to lead a discussion that ties in with both words and the photos of various birds that beautifully illustrate the book. Once again author Callie Grant & illustrator Missi Jay have created a wonderful book I can hardly wait to share with my great-grandkids.

My Review: The definition I heard that seemed to sum up the whole thing is "treat others as you would Jesus." The only other sentence I could add would be Matthew 7:12 (and Luke 6:31), "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you." This is how I was raised. Not how I always act, but I have always tried to be courteous and respectful of others. And, I am usually surrounded by people who are the same in their treatment of others.

Of course, I have seen people who scream at or are disrespectful to others. I have had it directed at me. So, I am guessing the point of this study is dealing with people who do not know how to treat others, especially with confrontations, or how to respond. I have to confess, this is not the study for me. Ten weeks of people talking about talking is more than I can handle. Then, there is the overuse of the word empower in the study guide. That word annoys me---a lot. The meaning of it is to help people gain confidence, and there is nothing wrong with that; it just sounds so egocentric that it has negative connotations when I see it.

Keep Your Love On: Connection and Boundaries by Danny Silk

Danny Silk, a member of the leadership team of Redding, California's Bethel Church, wants to raise the standard our culture has on the definition of love. He wants people to have a mature Jesus-focused love instead of our more immature version of love that is based more on emotion and what we are feeling. Silk offers ways for people to "keep their love on" during all times and not give up easily during times of conflict. According to Silk, there are 5 ways to help you to choose love.

1. Consider the other person’s love language. Based on The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman, knowing your own love language, as well as your loved ones can make a tremendous difference.

2. Become powerful. Power is not about controlling others. Powerful people learn to control themselves.

3. Turn your love on. Know that love is a choice and it is up to you to seek a connection and commitment.

4. Communicate. You don't have to agree on everything, but you do need to listen to what the person says, thinks, and feels. Find a point of connection.

5. Set limits. Boundaries are important to maintain a healthy relationship. Creating levels of who has priority in your life is vital. If you drop everything to please everyone, and neglect those nearest and dearest to you, it is bound to cause resentment. 

My Review: I loved it and and, sometimes, I really disliked it. There were times to be honest, my toes were stepped on---HARD! I mean the book started out pretty good. Silk was talking about something from The 5 Love Languages that fit a personal situation so closely that I could have sworn he was spying on me. It made me laugh, but also helped clarify things to add some resolution to my personal conflict. I was feeling pretty good. And, then...I began to read truths I did not always want to accept. Sometimes we let ourselves get comfortable and that's not always a good thing. Change can be difficult, but I recognized several things that need tweaked. Also, a couple that I need to completely revise. I wish I had been given some of this advice as a younger woman, but there is still time to grow and improve. I definitely recommend this book.

My review: I have read and loved several of Callie Grant's board books for younger children and have them for my great grandchildren to look at when they come to visit. So, I was definitely interested in her first book written for adults. This is a short read, but a powerful one. I have always been an advocate of training a child and being honest, albeit at their level, in dealing with the important things in life. And, their spiritual development is of utmost importance in building a strong foundation. The points made and suggestions are simple, but designed to make an impact. From the first suggestion of praying together over your child on the the various points of how to help children develop a relationship with God themselves, rather than just believing because their parents do, is an early Biblical concept.

The 5 Principles are:
First Impressions -Your child was born to believe. You were made to teach.

Little Think Tanks -Your child has great capacity for faith. You will help shape it.

Unique Journeys -Your child has a one-of-a-kind path. You are a shepherd.

Personal Ties -Your child has a special relationship with God. You can honor it.

Golden Moments -Your child will ask you about God. Your life helps you answer.

As always, there is Scripture to go along with what the book is saying, as well as interactive suggestions to help your little one on his or her own unique journey of faith. I highly recommend this to all expectant or new parents! I have never been disappointed with any product from Callie Grant/Graham Blanchard and once again, I love the book.

Catie Conrad: How to Become the Most (un)Popular Girl in Middle School

The 2nd in The Desperate Diva Diaries series, Catie Conrad has a new diary and new tween angst to write about. Catie Conrad: How to Become the Most (un)Popular Girl in Middle School  by Angie Spady brings back Catie, her best friend Sophie, her secret crush Josh, brother Jeremy, and nemesis Miranda Maroni.  The book, illustrated by Channing Everidge, is written in the style of a young girl's diary, complete with all of the drawings and sketches of future fashion designer, Catie. It's a continuation of the first book, but can be enjoyed as a stand alone title.

Miranda is up to her old tricks of making Catie look and feel bad about herself by accusing Catie of cheating on a test in the one subject she is good in AND by continuing to make fun of Catie's fashion designs. Everything Catie does is twisted by Miranda, and it's not easy to keep turning the other cheek and not finding a way to get even. With Valentine's day quickly approaching, the stress levels are higher than ever. Will Josh believe Miranda's lies? Catie is also trying to be supportive of Sophie and the Scholar Bowl team but what is the best way for her to help?

Of course, things are zany at home too. As if her brother and his pet skunk, Rosie, weren't enough, Jeremy AKA "The Germ" is pet-sitting a friend's bearded dragon!! Then, just when things could not get worse---Jeremy breaks his leg! Guess who is put in charge of taking care of the pets and helping her brother?

This second book is just as much fun to read as the first one. I am way past those traumatic middle school years, so I read these with a touch of amusement interspersed with my own memories of the drama that goes with being that age. But, I am also very impressed with the message that goes out to young girls, especially Christians, that we all face problems, but we have a God always available to turn to in times of need. The use of Scripture and the counsel of parents and support of friends who share the same values and beliefs are presented in a way that does not appear to be a lesson. I strongly recommend The Diva Diaries.

My Review: I guess this would be considered more of a devotional style book since it is not one you just pick up and read. It's divided onto 5 parts:

• Part 4: Be More...Engaged With Your Community
• Part 5: Be More...Mindful Of Your World

There's a little more than a page written on each 'Secret' to a more powerful life, and each one ends with a saying that is suitable for sharing on Twitter or Facebook, ending with #BeMore.

There are a lot of people who will love this book. I get a little frustrated with sound bites over a more indepth study, so it's not really the book for me. I see a lot of people who tweet or do a quick FB status update meant to encourage, and have even done so myself, so it would be useful to grab something to reflect on for the day. But, I confess, I was disappointed that it seemed to be more style than substance.

Who You Are by John Croyle

Who You Are: A Story of Second Chances is the story of  John Croyle, founder of Big Oak Ranch for Boys and Girls in Alabama. Croyle was an All-American defensive end at the University of Alabama with a promising future with the NFL. The book's title comes from the request he makes of each of the children when being introduced to someone: "Tell them who you are!"  Introducing oneself, with a firm handshake and looking the person in the eye, helps each child realize their own intrinsic value. Their worth is not based on their past or the circumstances that brought them to the ranch. Nor is it the perception of what the child (or anyone) believes God can or can’t do through each individual. Each child is a unique individual who is valued and loved.

Who You Are is filled with memories of the 40 years of the Croyle family's ministry. John started this right after college, with no idea what he was beginning. He had 5 teenaged boys living with him, and a few months later married his high school sweetheart, Tee (Theresa) Smith. The book is filled with anecdotes, ranging from heartbreaking to humorous, but each points to the difference an individual can make in someone's life by following the plan they believe God has for them. There have been triumphs and failures, but Croyle's honesty with the reader is as transparent as his honesty with the children who are brought to live at Big Oak Ranch.
Each child who moves to one of the ranches is told 4 things during their initial meeting:
1. I love you.
2. I’ll never lie to you.
3. I’ll stick with you until you’re grown.
4. There are boundaries; don’t cross them.

Croyle's adult children, Reagan Croyle Phillips and Brodie Croyle, are now taking on a large part of the responsibility and daily hands-on tasks of the Big Oak Ranch system, but they have the same love for these kids as their parents. This is definitely a family labor of love, including the extended family of those who have made Big Oak Ranch their home.

I loved this book. Even though it is partially a 40 year stroll down "Memory Lane" with an emphasis on how and why Croyle chose to do this, there are lessons to be learned just as there are in any of his books (and I recommend them all!) that will speak to the reader. Whether you are in the position to mentor a child (and who isn't to some degree?) or if you just need a reminder of Who YOU Are and that you are valuable in the eyes of God, there is something to gain from reading it. I have heard John speak at a church event and on the radio several times. This book captures his style and personality so well. So, if you know him at all, you will recognize him. If you don't...you will after reading this.

My Review: Kim Dolan Leto is a fitness expert, speaker, and author who chose to make some changes in life to lose weight and become more healthy. She has an approach that incorporates both healthy food decisions and spending time with God to create a balance that nourishes the body and the spirit. The book is divided into 10 different chapters, each with great ideas and strategies to transform your lifestyle and eating patterns, as well as inspirational Scripture and lessons to be learned and encouraged with as you progress. There were suggestions, especially for an early morning "Power Hour" that really resonated with me. I'm not in the habit yet, but I confess that my days do seem to go much better when I heed these suggestions.

Questions at the end of the chapters help one to put it all into perspective, and made me think that keeping a journal of progress, and even setbacks, would be a great way to see my progress and to pinpoint areas that need a bit more work. Her common sense approach, combined with practical advice and spiritual inclusion truly do make this approach to finding a healthy body, mind, and spirit doable, no matter where your starting point is.

My Review: This is a great book for tween girls! The characters are a lot of fun to get to know and remind me of a few people I have met. I love that it is written from a Christian viewpoint that shows Catie learning to make her faith her own, and the guidance of her parents is a wonderful example of parenting. These are most certainly not perfect people, but lessons are learned through fears, failures, triumphs, and new experiences. I would have loved to have had these books when I was younger and will most definitely recommend this series to friends with daughters around the age of Catie in friends. With so few books for kids having good role models, this is a breath of fresh air. Not only will it encourage girls to read, but I believe that the perfect accompaniment for this book would be a diary and a pack of pens...preferably colored ones. Sometimes purple ink just adds to the joy of writing! Catie Conrad: Faith, Friendship & Fashion Disasters is published by B&H Kids. The book is 304 pages and is geared for grades 3-7 and ages 8-12.

My Review: This latest boardbook by Callie Grant is not only perfect for young hands to hold, but also explains the Holy Spirit in such a simple manner that children can get a basic grasp of who He is. The Trinity is a hard concept for even adults to understand sometimes, but this is an excellent starting point. The colorful illustrations by Missy Jay also serve as a visual to help anyone learn the message the book teaches. I highly recommend this book for Sunday School classes, church libraries, or your home library for the young children in your life. Wine and the Word by Kurt Senske

My Review: I have always been aware of the many Scriptures that include wine and the vineyard, but I know nothing about winemaking. I love the way this book shares the intricacies of wine development and the varieties of wine and it is a great metaphor of Christians. One chapter spoke on how some winemakers will "sell-out" or compromise quality for what they can gain. There are many Christians who slowly get caught up in the culture around them and forget they are to be nurtured by the the One who wants us to be our best. Just as an oenophile, whether an expert or a beginner, breathes in, savors, and lets the taste of the wine explode, we are called to "Taste and see that the LORD is good." In John 15 Jesus tells us that He is the vine and we are the branches. We must stay attached to Him so we can glorify God, the Master Gardner.

In explaining the full process of winemaking and how conditions affect the harvest on to some of his favorite wines and experiences of sharing wine with loved ones, Senske illustrates that God's Word can have that same impact in our development. Wine and the Word: Savor and Serve is a small sized book that would be perfect for the wine lover you know to enrich their knowledge of how Scripture is reflected from the beginning to the finished product. It is one you can pick up and enjoy for a long time.

My Review: If you are looking for a book that covers just about everything you can think of for a wedding, this is the one for you. My favorite part was at the beginning of the book when they went into more detail of Biblical betrothals, marriage contracts, and wedding ceremonies. It brought a greater clarity to some of the metaphors used throughout the Bible, especially with the church being called the Bride of Christ.

The rest of the book is divided up into easy-to-read chapters on various aspects from the engagement to the reception. There were several ideas that I really loved and would suggest to anyone planning a wedding. I did love the way that each focused on having Christ at the center of it all. It brought a deeper meaning to the commitment the couple are making to one another and to their commitments as followers of Jesus.

Honestly, much of it is more overwhelming than anything I would have wanted to do, but I tend to be overly pragmatic. But, I still found it interesting and helpful. There were even things that I wish I had done. All-in-all though, I felt that it covered areas that could handle most budgets. The thought of spending thousands of dollars on a ceremony is absolutely horrifying to me, so if I think something is doable...it is. So, whether you are planning a very low cost wedding or if money is no object, the important thing is to work together with your finances, your personal views, consideration of others, and most of all, sharing and celebrating the love of Christ.

My Review: Notes From A Blue Bike: The Art of Living Intentionally in a Chaotic World by Tsh Oxenreider is described as part memoir, part travelogue, and part practical guide. That does seem to sum it up fairly well. Oxenreider does chronicle the various places she has visited and adventures there, although I am not quite clear why she was in most of them. There are also long discussions on what decisions were made and why they were made about schooling, televisions, and numerous other daily activities. To be fair, she definitely does have a talent for writing and expressing herself. Her style reminds me somewhat of Ann Voskamp. And, I was very impressed with the way the book was divided into organized sections. Great clarity of thought went into what belongs in each section.

But, I must confess, her idea of a simple life is vastly different than my own. While I am certainly in favor of world travel and broadening one's cultural activities, she did come across as a tad condescending at times.I am happy for her that she is able to live her life the way she wants to, but that is not a lifestyle many are able to live. There are some great ideas, but not all are realistic for many of the people I know. It is a great book for some people, but just not for me.

Little Seed: A Life by Callie Grant

"Little Seed: A Life", a Graham Blanchard Publishing praise book, follows the life cycle of a seed. Following the progression of a seed from when it is first dropped into the ground on to its transformation through the seasons to a full grown plant and ending with the plant producing seeds of its own, this book can open a discussion with a child about how God changes and uses all of His creation through growth.

God's provision for growth is another story that can easily be another discussion that evolves naturally while reading this book to your preschooler. I love the bold, bright illustrations by Suzanne Etienne and believe they will fully engage a child's attention and initiate conversations about all they observe. The simple sentence structure is also just enough to hold a young child's attention and can stand alone or their own or be a stepping stone to a richer discussion about what is happening in the story, or to help an older child see this as an illustration of spiritual growth. This board book is a terrific size for older preschoolers to hold and "read" on their own. I highly recommend this book.

Close As A Breath by Callie Grant

"Close As A Breath" is an absorb book written by Callie Grant that encapsulates a fabulous autumn day shared between a daughter and a dad. As she asks her father numerous questions triggered by the things she can see, smell, and feel, he responds with answers that explain that through the unseen and the seen, she can know that God is also surrounding her.

This warmly inviting book, illustrated by Sarah Ackerley, will retain a child's interest and will likely trigger a few more questions being asked. The simple answers the father gives his daughter are age appropriate (the book was written for children up to 6 years old). They also open the opportunity for a parent to discuss God and faith with his child on a very elementary level that helps to build faith.

Jesus Saves Me by Callie Grant

"Jesus Saves Me," from the Knowing My God series, is a learn book. The main theme in this book by author, Callie Grant, is presenting Jesus as The Good Shepherd in a simple introductory style for young children. Using John 10:14-16 for the scriptural basis, the book uses the words of Jesus to explain how the shepherd takes care of his sheep just as He takes care of His people. The book also teaches the importance of getting to know Jesus so you learn His voice over all others. Of course, this is put in a simplified manner that young children can understand.

What impressed me the most was how the book can grow with the child or is perfect for a family with young children of various ages. There are very simple sentences that a toddler can understand and not get bored with, but there is also a longer paragraph on the page for young readers or for any child that is ready to learn more of the basic tenets of faith and to reason out how to apply what they have just read to their lives. Parents can use the written portion, along with the illustrations to teach their children more about Jesus and His love for his people. Illustrated by Jodie Stowe, it is brightly colored and has photographs that will both capture a child's attention and initiate conversation. The book is suitable for children 0-7 years old, and is a durable board book that is easily held by small hands. The negative would be that it is probably easily chewed by young ones who are teething, but I do recommend this book.

Although the book is written primarily toward men, the book absolutely can be used by women, too. The importance is in raising your daughter to be the confident, compassionate person she is cable of becoming. Croyle and his wife, Tee, are the parents of a daughter and a son, but also have 40 years experience in helping to raise abused and neglected children and repair the damage done to them by others, usually their parents.

Each child who moves to one of the ranches is told 4 things during their initial meeting with "Mr. John":
1. I love you.
2. I’ll never lie to you. 
3. I’ll stick with you until you’re grown. 
4. There are boundaries; don’t cross them.

Building the trust of a child is just the initial step  From there, he and the house parents make the above principles a part of teaching a girl that she is of value to herself, to others, and to God. This book was filled with wisdom that a parent can use to instill confidence and build trust with their child. You won't raise a perfect child---no one can make that promise---but I have heard numerous success stories of children that had gone through unimaginable lives and these practical and godly principles made the difference. You will want to go through this one with a highlighter! It was all good, but several things just made me stop and want to soak in the words I had read. This is the perfect gift for anyone who will have a part in raising a little girl.

My Review: 'Restless' is a word I have used to describe myself for a couple of years now, so I jumped at the opportunity to review a curriculum based on that word. When I saw that it was going to be based on a study of Joseph and how his story is woven from tangled threads into a beautiful picture of God's ultimate plan for his life, it all made sense. As Jennie put it, "Untangling the threads of our lives and assembling them together in one place reveals a beautiful plan designed by the Creator himself: God's Agenda + my threads + the need + the Holy Spirit = my purpose."

This 8 part dvd curriculum, meant for small groups, is interactive for members to respond to each session. The topics bring a focus the unique threads in your life: the Gifts, Scars, Places, People, Passions that combine to make you the person you are and can be used to fulfill God's purpose in your life. A part that struck a nerve with me was when Jennie used the example, "Why would I teach a Bible Study when Beth Moore is in the world?" I know how quickly I back away from projects because there are so many who do it so much better. It is easy to be restless when you keep retreating to a place filled with fear and self-doubt. This isn't a study that goes deep into Scripture, but I feel that it is one that can be as beneficial to the mature believer as it can to those new or seeking faith. This is a study that can meet people where they are today.

I highly recommend this curriculum. Even if you have never led a study group before, there are clear instructions and suggestions on the best way to use your time. I also liked the discussion cards to be used; sometimes you need spark to ignite a conversation and these work great. Of course, when you are being transparent with others, there will need to be trust among the group. So, while it could be abridged to fit the needs of a larger group, but it is still suggested you break into more intimate groups for discussion. I liked it just as a personal study and plan to go back through it again without having to make the notes I needed as a reviewer. The kit comes with the dvd, the leader's guide, a participant's study guide and a discussion card set.

I Like Giving by Brad Formsma

I Like Giving by Brad Formsma is a book that focuses simply on the joy of giving. There is a lot on financial giving, but also plenty of stories about other forms of giving as well. He admits that his family do have the financial resources available to meet the needs of others, and I love how they look for opportunities. His family does have rules on how much to give without having a family discussion. Generosity is wonderful, but boundaries do need to be set. The stories of financial giving in the book vary from one person giving, a few friends giving, on up to someone creating a Facebook Event to help a fellow student who was struggling. Sometimes the act of allowing others to be a part of the giving effort is its own act of giving.

The stories are not strictly about money, but suggest other ways to make a difference. Through a series of small anecdotes entitled "I Like.......", we learn of opportunities people shared of giving time, a smile, a second chance, etc. Some required more sacrifice than others, but all agreed that it was worth any sacrifice made to make a difference in the life of someone else.

One of the ones that made me smile, and enforced the idea of training our children in the way they should live involved potty training. Not only was this 3 year old little boy in the habit of wasting food, but he was also in no hurry to be potty trained. When his mom explained to him about other people going hungry due to lack of food, he asked how they could help. His mom got creative and resourceful by suggesting that the money they spent on Pull-Ups could be used to help people who are hungry. He went on to have the pride of knowing he was in "big boy underwear", but that he was also helping others. A very large lesson for a small boy, but one that needs to be learned early.

Some of the stories may seem redundant, but I can't name one I would omit. Not only is this a book that makes you feel good as you rejoice with both the recipient and with the giver, but it is one that make spark ideas on ways you can make a difference. A quote by Henry Nouwen on the 'I Like Giving' website is, "Every time I take a step in the direction of generosity, I know I am moving from fear to love". I love the encouragement to give whatever it is you have to offer, and that this is not just about giving to the poor. People from all walks of life can use encouragement and your gift, no matter how great or small, can make a powerful impact on both the recipient's life and your own.
