The Logic of God - Ravi Zacharias

The Logic of God: 52 Christian Essentials for the Heart and Mind by Ravi Zacharias is a weekly offering on the topics that are important to Christians on why the Bible and God are still vital, relevant and life-changing. Ravi says, "I am convinced that Jesus Christ alone uniquely answers the deepest questions of our hearts and minds." Each week's reading provides Scripture, questions for reflection, and some practical application steps that apply to your life.

The book itself is a beautifully bound hardcover that is meant to be used frequently. It's not necessarily one you would normally read straight through but to be used in either your own quiet time and study or as part of a small group. Some of the topics are going to make more of a personal impact than others, but each is important as part of your faith-walk. I rushed through much for review purposes although some did cause me to linger a bit. I look forward to reading the book again as part of a weekly devotion. As always, Zacharias uses rational thinking, courtesy, intellect, and humor to challenge the reader to seriously consider the topic.

Why God Won't Go Away by Alister McGrath

In his latest book, Why God Won't Go Away: Is The New Atheism Running On Empty?, author Alister McGrath presents an overview of the group who call themselves "New Atheists". These are people are not merely content with not believing in God themselves, but are on a mission to convince others to see their point of view as the correct one. In fact, I have heard this group described as "evangelical atheists". This is a fairly short book, & is conveniently divided into 3 parts:
1. What Is The New Atheism?
2. Engaging The New Atheism: Three Core Themes
3. Where Does The New Atheism Go From Here?

Professor McGrath provides a clear, insightful explanation from the roots of this movement, to the leaders (Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennet, and Christopher Hitchens) and their individual viewpoints, and continues on with the general beliefs of the followers of this movement and the direction they appear to be heading. I felt he gave a fair assessment of the core beliefs and reasoning of the people who feel this passionate about eradicating God from our lives, and agreed with him on why many are unwilling to have a dialogue with those of the opposing viewpoint. I also appreciate all of the research he put into this book along with the notes, and further reading suggestions included. This is a very well done resource for those who wish to explore the thinking behind "New Atheism".

Alister Edgar McGrath, a former atheist,  is a Christian theologian and apologist who holds both a DPhil  and an earned Doctor of Divinity degree from Oxford.
