The Gospel For Real Life

We know that the gospel provides the news we share with others about salvation, but is that all there is to it? Do we need to read it on a daily basis, or is that part complete once we pray to accept Jesus as our Savior? Navigator author, Jerry Bridges, explores this issue in his book, The Gospel For Real Life. The gospel is to be used to transform you daily into the image of Christ. 2 Corinthians 3:18 is the verse that came to my mind, and is used in the Study Guide provided in the book. The best way to learn the character of anyone is to study them, and Mr. Bridges reinforces this throughout the pages of this book.

Although this book is not meant strictly for new believers, it is a good source for for those who are at the, "I'm now a Christian. What next?" phase. It is an excellent overview and explanation on such topics as assurance of salvation, Jesus as the scapegoat for our sins, and other things that may confuse those who were not raised in the church environment. I wish I had had a better understanding of many of these things when I first became a Christian. So, while I did not think the book truly covered the "liberating power of the cross", I would not hesitate to recommend it to others who want a deeper understanding of a daily walk with Christ. The Study Guide included is also a great benefit whether studying alone or with others.

UNLEASHED

UNLEASHED: Release The Untamed Faith Within (previously released as The Barbarian Way) is a small book that packs a powerful punch. Author, Erwin Raphael McManus asks if you believe Jesus died simply to give you an easy, trouble-free life. That seems to be the belief of too many Christians. It is also misleading to many non-Christians who believe that following Christ is the path to instantly having your problems taken away. To quote the back cover: "This is the barbarian way: to give your heart to the only One who can make you fully alive. To love Him with simplicity and intensity. To unleash the untamed faith within. To be consumed by the presence of a passionate and compassionate God. To go where He sends you, no matter the cost." (emphasis mine)

Is this the life you are looking for...or are you content to just muddle through in what I call "social club" Christianity?  There is nothing wrong with gathering with your faith family for fun and fellowship, but I don't want that to be my entire experience in my walk with Christ. I want to follow so closely to Him and in obedience that I can truly make an impact. Writing with a knowledge, passion, and sense of humor that I love, McManus clearly shows how the "barbarian way" is the most exhilarating path for Christ-followers. If you are content with the safe, timid belief in Jesus as your Savior, with no desire other than to make sure you have done the minimum requirement to get into Heaven, then this is not the book for you. However, if you want to have a passionate relationship with Christ and a full dependence on Him as you serve Him and reach out to others, I highly recommend Unleashed! My only complaint was that I did not want to stop reading. I must read more books by this author!

Max On Life

In his many years as a pastor and author, Max Lucado has been on the receiving end of many questions. In his latest book, MAX ON LIFE, he tackles 171 of those in a wide variety of topics. With a compassionate, straight-forward, and knowledgeable approach, Max uses Scripture, examples, and common sense to answer in an honest and simple manner. The questions are divided into the categories of Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Haves/Have-Nots, and Hereafter, but there is a convenient Topic Index in the back to help find a more specific area you wish to explore. This is a very "user-friendly" guide to those who want a straight answer to a simple question.

To be perfectly honest, this is not my favorite of his books. That being said, Max Lucado remains one of my favorite authors. His way of sharing a story is one that allows me to more fully comprehend the life of Christ and His teachings. The Study Guides that are incorporated are truly a blessing! However, this is not that style of book. This is a straight-forward Questions & Answers book that I would recommend for those who like to have a reference book to help with their own, or the questions of others. I have read some that left me even more puzzled, but Max has the knack of explaining things in a manner that nearly anyone can understand. I would recommend it to others, especially new Christians and seekers who want to know more of Christian beliefs in everyday living.

JOLT! by Phil Cooke

In JOLT!, Phil Cooke, reveals 25 "jolts" anyone can use in both their professional and their personal life. These are divided into groups under 5 sub-headings: 'Jolt Your Direction', 'Jolt What Matters', Jolt Your Potential', 'Jolt Your Heart', and 'Jolt Your Future'. Cooke, a well-respected television producer, commentator, and
social media guru presents ideas that can make a difference in how one approaches all decisions in life. Not only does he explain how to bolster confidence and make the most of your potential, but shows how to leave a lasting legacy that makes an eternal difference in the lives of others.

I loved the easy, conversational-style approach he used in writing this book. Each section was small enough that I wasn't overwhelmed by information, but could soak in what was being said and mull over how I could apply these methods to my own life. Cooke is upfront about his Christian faith and values influencing his worldview, but does not try to force them on others. As a fellow believer and follower of Jesus, I love that he incorporates this into the book, but I feel that others will find this book to be of equal value and respectful of different beliefs. This is a book that I will highly recommend, especially to those just beginning their careers and families. It needs be be on your MUST READ list if you have a business. I have reached an age where I regret more of the things I never did than I do the mistakes I made, and I believe JOLT! offers sage advice that a person will hopefully learn sooner rather than later.

The Final Summit

In "The Final Summit", author Andy Andrews brings back David Ponder, whom we first met in his "The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions That Determine Personal Success". In case you missed this 2002 book, here is a brief summary:
In the midst of despair and of giving up all hope, David Ponder is chosen to travel through time, visiting with other Time Travelers of historical significance. Each person he meets imparts to David wisdom learned that will make an impact.

While David has used the lessons learned to rebuild his life, he is now in his mid-70s and newly widowed. As he sits looking at the reminders of his past from his previous journey, and grieving over life continuing without his wife, he laments, "I just don't know what to do." At this moment, the Archangel Gabriel appears to him once again to tell him that he is being summoned. This time David will be leading a group of all of those who have been travelers as they are challenged to figure out how to save humanity. The rules are that they will be given 5 chances to figure out what the 2 words are that will make a difference in the human race's current course.

I have mixed feelings about this type of book. Since I tend to be more pragmatic, the idea of time travel, especially in a book geared more toward Christian beliefs, is a bit difficult for me to wrap my mind around. I also wish the book leaned more toward faith in Christ rather than leaving it up to wise humans to solve this dilemma. Yet, the various solutions offered are all extremely wise advice that anyone would be well-served to apply to their own lives. I will recommend the book to others, but it will be to those whom I know to be very secure in their faith.

Life Without Limits

If anyone had an excuse to complain or just sit around and do nothing, it would be Nick Vujicic. He, however, has packed more into his life in a year than most people do in a lifetime! This internationally known motivational speaker is honest about the physical and emotional hardships, even thoughts of suicide, but this candid look at his life is filled with hope. His faith in God, sense of humor, determination, thrill-seeking tendencies, and longing to inspire others, combined with a family who loves him unconditionally have led him to "a ridiculously good life".

I had originally planned on making note of a few things he had to say and posting them as part of this review. The problem with that idea was that I could not narrow is down to just a couple. His thoughts on overcoming difficulties, fear of failure, faith in God, and compassion were were simple, yet profound. His struggle to rise above his situation has given him a wisdom beyond his years, and I truly admire his forthright way of sharing the lessons he has learned.

I was very touched with his interpretation of being the hands & feet of Christ in the face of his obvious lack: "I take it spiritually. I serve Him by touching as many lives as I can through my testimony and my example." There is no doubt that Nick Vujicic has gone over and beyond the limits to most of us restrict ourselves to and sees no boundaries to what he can accomplish through Christ. I highly recommend this book to everyone!!

Magdalena: Through Her Eyes

Using JESUS (1979), the film that Campus Crusade For Christ has shared around the world in numerous translations as it's basis, Magdalena: Through Her Eyes adds supplemental footage to tell the story of Jesus through Mary Magdalene. We know from Luke 8:2 that Jesus freed Mary from 7 demons. She became one of His most devoted followers, and was present when Jesus was crucified and buried. In the 20th chapter of John, we also learn that Mary Magdalene was the first of His followers to whom Jesus appeared.

On one hand, some of the acting and costumes in the Jesus film have always made me cringe, yet I also have an overwhelming appreciation for Scriptural accuracy in films that are straight from the Bible. I do think the additional scenes that have been added to tell the story of Jesus from more of a women's perspective are an improvement. Take a look at a trailer from the film at this link: http://www.magdalenamovie.com/en/index.html

What I really appreciated, though, was the 8 week Bible Study for women that came with this film! Reflections Of Hope presents Jesus as our Pursuer, Forgiver, Power for Living, Deliverer, Provider, Restorer, Living Water, & Friend. In this study, the women are presented the opportunity to view a clip, share their spiritual journey, learn relevant Scripture and how to apply it, and are challenged to go deeper into a relationship with our Savior. This is an excellent study whether you are a believer who simply needs reassurance during a tough time or a seeker who yearns to find the Truth. This would be very well used in a mentoring situation or support group. I highly recommend you check this out for yourself at their website: Magdalena Today.

New CD by Rebecca St. James

It has been 6 years since Rebecca St. James last released a cd and I must say...this one is worth the wait! Her talent and her love for God shine through each song. I WILL PRAISE YOU is both the title of the cd and the first song. This is a message of hope in the midst of storms and is followed by a personal favorite: You Never Let Go. The theme is continued in Shine Your Glory Down.

You Still Amaze Me and the triumphant In A Moment, are quickly becoming 2 of my favorite worship songs. Each of the songs has a message of hope and encouragement that God is always with us, along with a reminder of our future hope. The Kindness Of Our God is a poignant remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and When The Stars Burn Down tell of our eternal Home.

Almighty God, You Hold Me Now (a fave that always comforts me), and You Make Everything Beautiful are reassurances that God is with us always and we can always turn to Him. There is not a single song that did not touch me and draw me into a closer time of praise and worship. This is a cd that you will want for your own, plus copies to share with others who need to know of the hope we have in our Lord.

The Blessing Of Adversity

"The Blessing Of Adversity" may seem like an oxymoron to many, but this excellent book by Barry C. Black proves that it is the trials we endure that makes us stronger when we trust in God. Speaking from many familiar stories we know from the Bible, coupled with his own background of rising from poverty to a position of power and prestige, this is certainly not a superficial tale of one who does not understand feelings of hopelessness and despair. Many examples are highlighted of the ways God has used hardships in life to strengthen His people. These are people who underwent suffering and emerged triumphant not in spite of  their struggles, but because of these trials. This book was written by a man that has gained both wisdom and compassion and gives advice that provides hope, encouragement, and practical advice. Instead of just wallowing in misery, he tells the reader to use these experiences to grow stronger and to find the advantages of your situation.

Barry C. Black (From The Hood To The Hill: A Story Of Overcoming) went from poverty and public housing to a distinguished career as a chaplain of the US Senate and retiring from the US Navy with the rank of two-star admiral. He is certainly a man who knows what he is speaking about and has penned a book that brings hope to others who are suffering. I often find myself rolling my eyes while reading books by people who have observed hardship, but are actually clueless on how it feels to go through trials and tribulations. Not only does Rear Admiral Black know how it feels to live without the little luxuries some take for granted, but also has experienced doing without the necessities. My favorite part of each chapter is his "action plan" that reinforces what he has said with a practical application of faith. My thoughts went to 2 Corinthians 5:7 ~ "We walk by faith, not sight." and the knowledge that faith is not only passive, but also requires action. That verse can literally mean putting feet to your faith and stepping out to use the trials God is allowing you to undergo as He leads you in your journey Home.

In compliance with new regulations by the Federal Trade Commission: Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book. However, it was not required that I write a favorable review.
